Deborah Gordon’s guest was Win Boerckel, Lung Cancer Program Coordinator of Cancer Care, which is a national non profit based in New York City that provides adults and children who have cancer with a variety of free support services, including financial help and counseling by trained social workers.  This organization also provides services to families of people with cancer.  Spotlighted November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and discussed Cancer Care’s efforts to reduce the stigma that is associated with the disease, and provide special education workshops and forums, to ensure that those with lung cancer get the assistance they need.  For more information, visit cancercare.org or lungcancer.org.

Deborah Gordon’s guest was Herbert Stupp, CEO of Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York, which is a not-for-profit charity serving children, families and developmentally disabled adults across New York City and Long Island. Spotlighted November as National Adoption Month, and discussed Little Flower’s efforts to encourage the community to adopt children in foster care, especially teens.  Provided data on foster care and adoption, and discussed the many programs in place for these children in need.  For more information about adoption, visit www.littleflowerny.org.

Deborah Gordon’s guest was Cori Ellison, Dramaturg of The New York City Opera which was founded in 1943 by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and is known as the “people’s opera” because it strives to provides accessible opera to a wide audience regardless of economic status.  Spotlighted their Cinematic Opera Series which delves into the relationship between opera and film, and is part of the Opera’s effort to bring live music and provocative cultural conversation to a variety of venues in all five boroughs of the city by offering concerts, talks and film screenings.  The Series is part of the Opera Matters program, which helps to bring music into the lives of children in New York City public schools and also brings together prominent artists, scholars and celebrities from diverse artistic and cultural communities to reiterate opera’s continued relevance, and vital place in today’s cultural dialogue.  For more information visit, www.nycopera.com.
Sunday, October 26, 2008 - Susan. G. Komen for the Cure of Greater New York
Deborah Gordon’s guest was Donna Lawerence, Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Greater New York, which is an is the largest source of breast cancer funding and research.  Their annual race helps increase awareness about breast cancer and raises funds to help eradicate the disease.   Provided statistical, data including the fact that there is a decrease in the number of women going for mammograms in New York, which has among the highest death rates in the country.  Also, discussed their programs, services and funding; and stressed the importance of early screening and detection.
